eBay Express Preview Site Launches

eBay Express launched its preview site today. There was a General Announcement from Bill Cobb regarding the preview launch of eBay Express today. Some coverage about the launch also on an E-Commerce Times post by May Wong.

I’m waiting to hear back if there will be the ability to search eBay Express via the eBay Web Services. Most of the Express features integrated into the Web Service at this point have been concentrated from the perspective of the seller. You can see the details on the eBay Developer Blog post.

Shopping.com Plans to enter Australian Price Comparison Market?

Yahoo! Shopping already has an Australia-based comparison engine. But I’ve now heard that eBay owned Shopping.com plans to move into the Australian market next.

“The new Shopping.com AU site will launch in mid-May 2006 and the first 6 weeks from the launch will be FREE of charge for all registered merchants.”

Anyone else heard this? Seems like a good move for Shopping.com, and especially if they are going to be letting merchants get a free trial. Hopefully they’ll add the ability for developers to call upon the AU information shortly after the launch (I’m sure it will take at least 6 weeks!).

This information comes from a friend and fellow Shopping.com API user. His site focuses solely on digital cameras. FYI- He is planning on giving away free camera gear in the next few weeks, and is looking for some people to vote on what type of gear they’d be interested in. The Woot Effect

This is my first attempt at blogging something directly from Digg… So bare with me.

The “Digg” was an interesting forum post of a webmaster who runs a price comparison website discussing the effect of a product being put up on Woot.com (Wooted) and how it increases traffic to Price Comparison Engines.

Whats up with the Shopping.com Movies Section?

Check out the Movies section of Shopping.com. Most of the DVD selection is limited to comparing prices from one or two merchant stores… Anyone know anything about this? It’s pretty bad, I hope they are just revamping their system.

Shopping Comparison Engines Research

E-consultancy released a (UK) report for March 2006 entitled Shopping Comparison Engines: Buyer’s Guide. Here are some important points I picked up on:

An increase in the shopping comparison market across the board, specifically:

“The shopping comparison market is growing at 30% year-on-year, according to figures from comScore Media Metrix.”

We are heading towards affiliates driving more of the comparison engines’ traffic.

Merchants may be better off selecting to advertise with niche comparison sites, rather than the biggest ones. The report states:

“There may be niche or vertical-specific comparison sites which can do a better job at qualifying the leads, resulting in higher conversion rates and an improved return on investment.”

Market Summary

  • Growing shopping comparison market
  • Increase in the ratio of traffic generated by comparison engine affiliates
  • Appeal for niche or vertical-specific sites

I believe that merchants may want to look at what steps companies are taking to create these niche shopping comparison portals. Shopping.com and Yahoo! have already taken the initial steps by providing their data to affiliates as a web service, thus, creating an environment for innovation. Hopefully, this innovation will lead to creation of niche sites and integration of pricing comparison information in unique and useful ways. Not simply hundreds of shopping comparison engine look-a-likes.

The Googlebot and AdSense Affair

For all the SEO people out there, I’m becoming greatly bothered by Google recently. This post is for my brother, who said to me just a little while ago that he bets people running Google AdSense advertisements somehow benefitted on the Google search engine. A post on SearchEngineWatch.com by Jennifer Slegg states:

“Publishers running AdSense on their pages may find that the Mediapartners-Google bot - the special Google bot used by AdSense to determine ad targeting on a publisher page - is actually sharing the results of those crawls with the main Google search database.

Greg Boser spotted it when pages being served strictly to AdSense began showing up in the main search database. And cache dates and times are matching exactly with when the Mediapartners-Google bot visited the page for ad targeting purposes”

“But this is definite clear cut evidence that yes, the mediabot is sharing info with the googlebot, and possibly vice versa.”

Shop in the US from Outside the US

This site, ShopTheStates.com, allows non-US based customers to order through US-based e-tailers (that only ship within the US).

Basically your goods are forwarded to you. You sign up for a US address, then you order items to that address and have them shipped from there to your country. Here’s the process:

  1. Sign up for your US mailing address.
  2. Shop online.
  3. Your packages are deliveried to your US-based address. You then recieve an email from ShopTheStates.com with your best shipping options.
  4. You select the shipping option that best suits your budget, then next day your order is shipped directly to your home in your own country.

I really don’t know all that much about it… I just thought it was an interesting concept. According to Alexa its been online since 2003, so I guess its not new. Hmm…?

Buy.com Web Services - Where?

I check the blog traffic stats here every so often to see where people are coming from, and what they are searching for. One group of keywords imparticular caught my eye today. A user searching for Buy.com web services api. It makes me think: Why hasn’t Buy.com made any moves in this area yet? Its not like the technology just came out yesterday. Amazon has been offering web services for years, specifically their E-Commerce one. Web services are obviously working for Amazon… How many *illions of revenue are Amazon affiliates bringing in…?

Buy.com competes with Amazon in many areas, why not that one?  I mean I’m not saying there should be a duplicate of Amazon’s ECS, but be innovative! And personally I think I speak for all Buy.com affiliates in saying that downloading their enormous datafeed file from CJ is painful… No? Perhaps I will contact them and inquire about this.

Mashups on the Rise - ProgrammableWeb Tells All

ProgrammableWeb.com recently added some truly awesome graphs and charts to their site. Users can now visually track mashups trends. I predict the database to hit over 1,000 mashups by the end of Summer 2006.

Frucall Beta - In-Store Comparison Shopping By Phone

A new service was announced last Monday, allowing consumers to check prices on the go. I have yet to try the service myself, but it seems like it has potential. However, it has yet to be determined if the majority of the general consumer population will put an item down in the store to save a few bucks and wait to go home order it online and receive it via mail at a later date. It will definitely depend on:

  • Timeliness of the item to the Consumer
  • Amount of savings over the in-store price

For larger price differences (more savings) and items that can wait, definitely a good idea.
